My Philosophy about Public School Education

Clear, concise and to the point. My philosophy is based on my real life's experience as an elected school board member and almost sixty collective years of engagement in public school education with my five children.

My philosophy regarding public education is rooted in the original intent of those who founded the first tax-funded public school in the 17th century. I believe, as did our Founders, that an educated and literate citizenry is essential for our community to flourish.

Public education is to be egalitarian and principally focused on ensuring that each citizen has the foundational skills necessary to function as a productive member of the community in which they live and is able to avail themselves of the opportunities to succeed according to their God-given abilities, personal interests, and choices.

Public education is funded through taxation of the members of the community and must be held accountable for providing those foundational skills. Therefore, even though the public schools routinely endeavor to do more than inculcate those foundational skills in their students, it is essential that the yardstick by which the schools are measured primarily be the mastery by its students of those foundational skills and not those other endeavors.

I am a product of such a public school education.
